Amsterdam is a city that is steeped in history and infamous for its culture. As well as embodying the friendly, hospitable nature that the Dutch are so famous for, Amsterdam is home to some of Europe’s best summer events. Here are five summer events in Amsterdam you must attend:
No matter what your musical or cultural tastes are, you will be able to indulge in the relaxed atmosphere that comes with the Holland festival. In the past opera acts have been billed alongside world dance ensembles, allowing visitors to broaden their cultural horizons. Tickets are inexpensive, but popular events sell out fast. This month long festival for me is the very best time to visit the city, given that there are events on every day throughout the festival season and covering such a diverse range of the arts. Art, music, theatre and various live and artistic performances and most of these taking place in central parts of the city. I cannot recommend the Holland Festival highly enough if you are interested in the arts.
While most people who think of Holland do not automatically think of gastronomy, Amsterdam does hold an annual taste festival late in June each year. Held in an open air park, the taste festival offers visitors the opportunity to try tantalising dishes from around the globe. You can learn more directly from the Taste of Amsterdam website, which list the restaurants involved and the events calender for this festival.
For those who want to make the most of Amsterdam during the summer who don’t quite fancy a festival, the Open Garden Days offer the perfect opportunity to experience Amsterdam at its most chilled. Tucked behind the canal houses are Amsterdam’s best kept secrets: immaculately kept gardens. Each June they open to the public, providing visitors with the perfect chance to relax.
Grachtenfestival takes a unique approach to musical enjoyment. Each year, over 80 concerts are held over the space of a few days in August. That in itself may not be surprising, but as they are held in musical halls, museums, historic buildings, and the homes of those who live in Amsterdam, the event is much more intimate than other musical attractions in the city. Each concert held is classical.
Even the most seasoned of travellers are often surprised to learn that Holland has its own answer to the international fashion weeks that are held in London, Paris, and Milan. The Amsterdam fashion week is held in January initially, with a repeat performance in July. As it is in its infancy, the atmosphere is laid back and artistic. With newcomers to the fashion photography scene displaying their work, and parties held throughout the event, it is perfect for those who love fashion and those who want to learn more about it.
